Thermoregulation – brood rearing
The next discovery for the team was the detection of a lost queen. We first observed this phenomenon last year and one team member set up an experiment this year where a queen was removed from a hive to see the effect it has on the internal temperature. The blue arrow points to the hive inspection when the queen was removed. About 20 days later, thermoregulation ended and the internal hive temperature followed the ambient temperature swings. We were surprised how clear a broodless condition shows up on the temperature trend.
